This version adds busses which carry effects for all of my recordings. I utilised flanger and reverb on the rhythm guitar, reverb on the lead guitar and a compressor and reverb on the bass guitar. These editions improve the sound of my track by a lot. I also laid more groundwork for the proposed structure of my track which will sadly not come to fruition. Overall this track in my opinion has not worked out at all. I started with trying to do something new and something I had never done before but realised it was much more difficult than I thought it was. As for the parts that are present in my track I think they're ok at best. My bassline in particular is something i'm really not happy with being a bassist myself It's lackluster. Technique wise there was some key techniques I used like flex time and busses however not enough as I would like. The best part of this track in my opinion is the guitar both rhythm and lead I just think they sound really good and the research I did for them did wonders. If I could have done things differently I would have selected a different genre of music, made my own drum track and not have stressed so much over the details in the track because that's what ultimately led to this unfinished project.Â
The first part of my project I would like to evaluate is my analysis which for the most part is the area I believe is the best in this project. My analysis of the songs No Time To Explain by Good Kid, Cosmic Girl by Jamiroquai and Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder gave me much needed insight into the methods, techniques and structures that I could use for my track. It helped me find possible instrumentation and the kind of meaning I could have put into my own track. I struggled with finding certain information about the tracks such as the studio equipment used for the tracks. For the most part here I feel as though my research and writing is desirable for this task. If I were to do this task again in the future I would've spent more time really digging for the sonic elements of the song and filling out that section to the best of my abilities.
The second part of my project I would like to evaluate is my research for my track. I had 3 research sources I studied in preparation for this track. My first source was a youtube video demonstrating some basics to playing funk on the guitar and demonstrated some chords and some timing techniques that I implemented into the guitar riff of my track. This was an invaluable piece of information for me and allowed me to lay the starting groundwork of my track. My second source was an informational guitar chord website containing many different funk chords. I combined this information with the prior video to make my own chord sequence for my track. My third source was a bass guitar website showing the minor pentatonic scale. I chose this scale because I thought it would be the simplest to create a quick bassline with. This source of information furthered my tracks progress significantly. If I were to do this task again I would definitely research many more sources than I did. I feel as though I wasted this opportunity and my track would have turned out much better with more varied research implemented into it.
The final part of my project I would like to evaluate is my track. Overall my final product did not turn out well at all. I was happy with the guitar parts I wrote but at the end of the day the melodies didn't even match. This track could have been much better had I done more research and spent more time actually progressing my track through its structure instead of getting bogged down on the first part of it and never moving on. However I do think that my production techniques for this track were decent with my use of automation, the piano roll, busses and FX. This definitely demonstrates my evolution of logic skills. If I were to do this track again I would pick a different genre, focus on moving my track forward, spend more time tone finding for my guitar and bass, produce a better drumbeat and do a much better job composing melodies and using those melodies across different instruments effectively.
