For my track I decided to attempt at composing and producing a funk genre full length track. This is the development of the track over the course of this project.
For version one I just wanted to put some ideas down from my head and see how it went. However it didn't turn out well in my opinion. This made me it clear to me that I would have to plan ahead and research before going and recording something. One thing I like from this track is the octave focused bass line which i would again later implement into a more developed version.
This is my second version of the track I composed after doing some research on how to create a funk guitar riff and also some suitable chords for doing this. I decided on the key Cmaj for this song because I wanted to create an overall cheerful track. I utilised the chords D9, Dm7, and Em7. The voicings of these chords I used excluded the root note and second note so they were just played on the bottom 3 strings, I made the choice to use these voicings because they were easier to play and implement and on top of this the exclusion of the first 2 notes made the song sound brighter and contrasted better in comparison to the bass. I also double-tracked the guitar and panned to each side. For the lead guitar I just improvised over an A minor pentatonic shape and looped the track until something came out. I am very happy with the guitar here overall the research I did helped me a lot. The bassline conceptually has remained the same since the last version with octaves however I changed the notes to fit the new guitar track. Overall the time I put into the second version paid off a lot. Although I believe some effects are needed, a lot of mixing and a new bassline I think would improve what I have so far.
After Rhodri listened to my track he identified that the guitar was out of time and that since my drum beat is swung slightly on every 2nd 16th note my guitar and other tracks have to be as well. To rectify this problem I utilised Logic's flex time feature to digitally change the timing of my already recorded guitar track which is a tedious process but easier than recording it completely in time. After doing this my track sounded much better and had that bit of groove that's essential to any funk track. I also laid out the groundwork for the structure of my track here including a second verse and chorus.
During the making of this version, I realised that there would sadly not be enough time to finish my full track so I made the decision to just finalise what I had already down and recorded. I spoke to Rhodri again and he suggested I put an EQ on all the instruments in the track. I decided to EQ the tracks in a way that opens up the track and gives it more space. To do this I added an HPF in the rhythm guitar track which made it much brighter and clearer since it wasn't fighting as much with the bass. For the lead guitar I cut out the low end and some of the high end while boosting the mids slightly. And for the bass, I put an LPF on it and boosted it slightly. All of this resulted in an improved track which is a much easier listen than any of my previous versions. I struggled a lot with writing a bass line here because nothing I could come up with fit what I was going for so I settled for this which I am still unhappy with except for the riff at the end of each chord progression. Overall the track is improving at a steady rate however it's not fast enough for it to be completed in time for the end of the project.
This version adds busses which carry effects for all of my recordings. I utilised flanger and reverb on the rhythm guitar, reverb on the lead guitar and a compressor and reverb on the bass guitar. These editions improve the sound of my track by a lot. I also laid more groundwork for the proposed structure of my track which will sadly not come to fruition.
